I'm sure you know the basics already, it's rude to kiss in public places, don't put your chopsticks upright in rice bowls and always carry your passport.
I'll now take the time to explain what, I think, you shouldn't do in Tokyo, Japan.
Don't act like the Japanese
I could talk forever about all the people I've met who feel as if they are or need to be Japanese. Something like "head over heels." After witnessing other foreigners approach Japanese girls out of desperation and not attraction I gagged on the thought, like the thought of milk men with carts well past the expiration date. And that sour.
How do you behave? For those of us that aren't tied up in something like spending money earned on Japanese porn, when God knows you could spend that amount of money on a plane ticket and film it yourself, this one is for you.
Throughout my life I've read e-mails from people who are in a hurry to learn Japanese, to be fluent in Japanese and to impress Japanese people. Impress Japanese people? Yeah, and it's not just by learning the language. These people, as mindless as undead, want a piece of of Tokyo, Japan, like the living. These people figure out ways to impress Japanese girls, one way I hear often is that if you are able to speak Japanese and are fluent then you will have better chances at having sex with Japanese girls. But these people, people who think like that, are wrong. It's annoying how often I have to remind people that the majority of Japan is fixated on western society
and if you need reminding... Japan would NOT be fixated on western society if the western society was fixated on Japan!
Haven't you ever known someone who'd copy your every move? Haven't you ever had a girl that you weren't interested in, obsess over you, call you at all hours and leave countless amounts of phone messages? Nobody wants that, nobody including Japan. It's as if the old saying, "just act yourself and people will like you for who you are," finally has meaning. And I recommend this to everyone traveling to Tokyo, Japan, please be yourself, and with the right confidence you'll have a better experience and a better life.
